When Cardinal Ratzinger was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (previously known as The Inquisition) prior to becoming Pope Benedict XVI, he strongly opposed in 2000 the beatification of the two children, Francisco and Jacinta (on the right and left in the photo below), who witnessed the Fatima apparitions.
It was indicated that he handed in his resignation as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, but Pope John Paul II did not accept it. The whole attitude of Cardinal Ratzinger to the issue of Fatima was very ambiguous.
Father Paul Kramer, a well informed contributor to the Catholic Family News stated in his article that Ratzinger supported the anti-Fatima establishment. It is most likely that Ratzinger, in his position as Prefect, had access to full information about the Fatima events which influenced his judgment.
The only conclusion that can be drawn from this is that in the light of all the evidence available for scrutiny, Ratzinger did not believe that the origins of the Fatima events could be divine. If they were not divine or man-made, they could only be of extraterrestrial origins.
