I was recently told 'there is no such thing as evil', but the person that said this often hurts people with their selfishness and back-biting. Is there such a thing as evil? JJ
Dear JJ, Many of my New Thought contacts are positive thinkers who do not accept the basis of evil in our world, but for me, the rational knowledge of reality is always the most intelligent, most caring and the safest, as this knowledge leads to discernment of what is right and wrong, and helps us to understand ourselves and others. Since the time of Zoroaster and perhaps before, the question of good and evil has been an important subject to discuss, as how can we live in a world which is ethical, comfortable, clean, consistent and caring if we do not accept the difference between good and bad. It is likely that the Essene brotherhood, to which John the Baptist and perhaps Jesus himself belonged, believed in evil by understanding the basis of evil in our world and in the lives of those around us and in ourselves, we can make the world a better place.
There are varying types of evil - the stupid idiot who drives wrecklessly and kills someone on the road has committed an evil act due to the hurt they have caused another person, the self-seeking who tramples on someone to get to the top, an uncaring person who denies their part in hurting another person or the one without conscience who takes from others because they believe they have greater entitlement than others. We can all hurt others, sometimes without thought or knowledge, unconsciously, stupidly, by mistake or by design and therefore we have the potential to be evil. We have a choice therefore, whether to do good or bad. We also have a duty, like the students knew in ancient times, to learn about the ways of humankind, to raise awareness, to speak out against corruption and exploitation, to campaign for what is right in order to make the world more aware and more caring.
Unless we, as a species, learn the difference between good and evil, there is no hope for our world.
