How to Escape a Trap Named History

Mankind has inherited a grim history of senseless violence, needless bloodshed, and highly contagious, non-thinking hatred, all of which is deeply rooted in fear. Of what does and does not Mankind consist? Unlike species of animals that are guided and controlled purely by instinct, Mankind is made up of billions of individual human beings each of whom is born with intelligence and is capable of using intelligence to make freewill choices if allowed to.

Fear through the ages has completely dominated mankind. Fear takes many forms. Fear is used as a tool by men of bright intelligence whose own fears lead them to feel they need to dominate and manipulate other men who have allowed their intelligent thought processes to be swamped and clouded by emotions and doubts of self. In this sense the domination by fear may produce apathy or ruthless drive in the minds of men. Fear is not an emotion fear is the product of animal instinct, and in its proper place fear is productive in that it makes the individual who feels it do something about it, to either face the cause of the fear or to escape from the cause.

Fear is not productive when it continuously rules human lives. Our beloved elders, our role models often lovingly and unwittingly breed fear into us when teaching us the rules of our society. In a competitive society such as ours fear of losing is the ever-present driving force that drives each competitor to be blind to the hopes and dreams of everyone else in the competition. To win is everything, to lose is unthinkable failure. A wise man once said that Competition is the way of the ignorant, and Co-operation is the way of the wise. Why have we as intelligent, thinking individuals allowed our ongoing fears to reduce us to the ignorant role of competitors in a competition that cannot be won? The competition cannot be won because the then current winners wrote its unfair rules long before any of us were born.

To make being mastered by fear remotely tolerable we have to justify to ourselves its powerful effects upon our lives. We justify its effects by also justifying our roles as gallant losers in a non-winnable competition. To justify we have to become judgemental in our outlook, this man is a successful man, that man is an unsuccessful man. Somewhere between the two our judgemental outlook places self. At this stage we have no choice but to lie to self. Having devalued self we tell ourselves that we need a leader and that our leader should be someone that is a winner in society’s competition. We tell ourselves that a person who is a multi-billionaire would make an ideal leader because he or she is a success with no personal interest in self-gain.

We deliberately neglect to remind ourselves that we could work 24 hours a day for a lifetime and never even remotely achieve the millionaire level. This of course could sound like ‘sour grapes’ until we recall that another very wise man remarked,” The person with enough inner strength, high ideals and principles, honesty and wisdom needed to lead a nation would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the throne.” In modern times we have yet to witness such displays of reluctance, in fact to become the leader is regarded as the pinnacle and ultimate winnable prize in a ruthless ‘no-holds-barred’ competition between very rich people. Insulated by our fear-induced helplessness we passively accept each leadership campaign, aided and abetted by the media, being fought with the dubious weapons of insults, smears against opponents’ characters, and a continuous play upon the fear-filled minds and emotions of the mostly non-politically-conversant electorate.

One might think that to lead a nation would be regarded by a leader as a great privilege, and not as a prize to be snatched by any means from other would-be leaders. Another wise man remarked that, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This is typified by the phrase “To toe the Party Line” An election is held and individual candidates claiming to intend to represent the wishes of ‘The People’ enter the electoral fray. Before they are accepted as candidates they must agree to ‘toe the party line’ but by agreeing to this they are subjugating the wishes of the electors to the wishes of the party. In turn the wishes of the political party are dictated by a cabinet of ministers who to retain their high positions must bow to the wishes of the leader. Failure to toe the party line leads to isolation of recalcitrant members of the government. The result often is a leader who together with non-elected, faceless, specialist advisors decides national policy while surrounded by highly placed politically career-minded yes-men who dare not disagree.

Having won the ultimate winnable prize the leader of a nation then finds that his or her options to dictate national policy are tightly controlled and circumscribed by powerful business corporations whose financial interests and powers to control national economies encircle the planet. Democracy is a wonderful idea, but we have yet to experience the true meaning of Democracy. The ancient Greek civilization developed a system of Democracy that limited the right to vote to only those educated citizens who clearly understood the issues to be decided by the vote. The ancient Greek civilization also used slavery as its labour force. We could assume that for slavery to function successfully as a long-term policy those forced into slavery were fed, clothed and sheltered. Also that providing that they passively accepted their roles, and their children’s roles as slaves their lives were not made too intolerable by their captors.

Really this is little different to today’s system, we are born into it and there is no escape from it. Whips and fetters are no longer required because the bondage that secures and controls us all individually is made of money or the lack of money, and of laws that we as individuals break at our peril. No longer are we called slaves or serfs, we are now called citizens. As citizens we are only as free as the size of our bank balance permits us to be. Somewhere on Internet we read that 95% of the world’s resources are owned and controlled by 5% of the world population. If this is true it really means that 95% of the world population has to exist and survive on 5% of world resources, 95% of +seven billion human beings whose thoughts are tightly channelled by deliberately manipulated circumstances to focus on getting their share of that 5%. This is fear at work on the individual human being level, and no legislation on the national or international levels could alter this selfish situation by one iota. Each winner is driven onwards by his or her fears, and each loser is dis-empowered into helpless apathy by his or her fears.

The escape from fear requires each of us to look closely at those fears that we have allowed to rule our lives. The fears that rule us are not obvious and so they have become integral to our way of life. They are not huge fears, like fear of nuclear war or fear of heights or fear of being mugged in some dark alley. These fears are far more insidious than that. The life we are born into makes us fear to be real people with original thoughts, opinions, and ideas that express our individual uniqueness regardless of the opinions of others. Instead we allow ourselves to become shadow people, a reflection of each other, and in this way we merge into the dubious safety and drab conformity of mass-thought. How do we recognise a shadow person when we see one?

A shadow person always seeks for a leader, for someone else to take the lead, whether it is a politician using the power of emotive oratory to win support, or a protester who uses emotive oratory to voice a protest, or a priest who uses authoritatively quoted dogma as his credentials for his claim to be a spiritual teacher. Once some other soul has courageously taken the lead the shadow people will hesitantly follow, but would never their selves take the lead. It is time to become leader of self. It is time to wake up and courageously step out of our comfort zones. What is a comfort zone? A comfort zone is a product of the ego mind and is completely surrounded by a wall of fear in the form of self-doubt. Self-doubt ensures that we passively and without protest accept the status quo no matter how unfair it may be.

Self-doubt ensures that individually we fear to be different and will always conform to and follow without question or deep thought the patterns of living that have always been imposed upon us by the competition winners. Self-doubt ensures that we will always worship without question the supposed rightness of tradition whether it is tradition in the form of religious leadership or in the form of governmental leadership. It is always easier to unthinkingly accept that ‘they know best what is good for me’. Unfortunately they don’t know what is best for me they only know what is best for their selves to quell their own hidden fears and self-doubts by manipulating yours and mine.

In truth there are no winners and losers, there are only losers while we all allow this crazy situation to continue to exist. Each of us could alter this situation by choosing to step away from the shadow land of self-doubt. By learning to trust our inner guidance, or intuition, or call it what you will, each of us could shine the light of truth into those dark places where fear-filled manipulators lurk. Self-trust means that each of us could choose to no longer remain silent when faced with unfairness in its many forms. To remain merged in with the silent crowd seems safe until it dawns on you that by doing so you are cheating yourself out of being a real person.

Try to imagine if you will what would happen if a mankind, every member of which independently chose to become what each of us really is, a fully aware, unique, very real person in his or her own right. The manipulated crowd would disappear overnight and the fear-filled situation would be transformed into a fairer, better world for all forever.
