Moving Forward with Forgiveness

When someone harms us we may feel resentful, especially if we don’t think we’ve done anything to deserve it. Maybe our spouse has run off with someone else; our business partner has been cooking the books, or we have been physically attacked. Until we forgive them, we cannot move on with our lives or our spiritual development. You may acknowledge this, want to do this, just don’t know how. This is because traditionally we are taught that in order to forgive, the other party must show contrition and make reparation. This is all very well, but if the other party won’t, or can’t because they have passed from this life, it means no resolution can be found, and you are stuck indefinitely.

But this is not necessary. In her book, ‘The Twins of Auschwitz’ by Eva Mozes Kor, the author relates how she and her sister Miriam were experimented on by Joseph Mengele. She forgave the Nazis for what was done to her. She says that forgiveness gives us freedom to step out of our negative feelings and move into a better and more fulfilling life, and that it is truly liberating!

This is quite correct. We feel a great burden has been lifted from us.
In order to forgive we need to change our perspective. Revenge is never an option because these people are already suffering. They must be to do such terrible things. They have no inner peace, no compassion yet it is compassion that they need, from us. They cannot escape the consequences of their actions. One needs to bless them, mentally, and let go. What is vitally important is that you understand why this has happened to you, and you may need to know to enable you to go forward.
